Preity’s a sport!

Heylooooo! Sher Lock Holmes texted me that Preity Zinta’s visit to Haridwar and her victory havan have borne fruit. Her IPL team Kings XI Punjab has begun to win matches and beat the finest teams in the tournament… But even she realises that it’s a little late in the day for that!

Never mind, Holmes says, she’s a sport and doesn’t take victories to her head and loses to her heart. So true! She’s been tweeting that she loves the wins and is really kicked about the way her boys are performing. She’s even tweeted that she’s slept with a grin on her face. That’s sweet!

Infosys Executive: Microsoft Contract Worth Over $100 Million

BANGALORE (Dow Jones)--Infosys Technologies Ltd.'s (500209.BY) three-year outsourcing contract with Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is worth more than $100 million, the Indian software exporter's chief financial officer, V. Balakrishnan, said Thursday.

Balakrishnan didn't provide further details in a text message to Dow Jones Newswires.

Late on Tuesday Infosys said it will manage the internal information technology services, including help-desk support, for Microsoft from centers across 104 countries.

The deal with Microsoft is based on a pricing model that decouples the contract's value from the number of people employed on the project, Infosys said in the statement.

The contract comes at a time when India's outsourcing industry is slowly recovering from the impact of the global economic slowdown, which led customers to scrap or delay projects and seek lower rates for products and services.

Software exporters are now getting more contracts than a year earlier as customers in the U.S. and Europe are reviving shelved projects and allocating more funds for technology services.

Lara talks about Bhupathi and the secret behind her hot bod

Lara Dutta has been in the news for her alleged relationship with tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi and her bikini bod. In a tell-all interview to Screen she speaks about Sajid Khan’s comic caper, Housefull and her alternate plans

The promos are out and the songs are all over the place. What is the kind of response you have been getting for Housefull?

Oh, fabulous. I have just been running around doing promotional activities for Housefull. I haven’t even had the time to talk to anyone; Sajid has been really keeping us busy. The songs are a rage and I have got some absolutely lovely compliments for my look, so yes there is a positive buzz around the film. Before a film releases, everyone associated with it is usually nervous and tensed about how it will do, but this time we are pretty confident about our product. I am hoping Housefull does really well. We have a good and housefull entertainer on our hands.

What do you play in this comic caper?

I play a Gujarati girl, Hetal Patel, who lives in London. It is a very complicated character and I am paired both with Akshay and Riteish. As far as Akshay is concerned, Hetal gets him married and then breaks his marriage. The film is about one man who is apparently married to three women.

We have seen you in a lot of comedies. Is comedy your favourite genre?

I am very comfortable with comedy. I am very blessed to have worked with Sajid Khan, David Dhawan and Priyadarshan, people who have been in this business for years. It is a huge compliment when they think of me in terms of a comic actor. Comedy has an amazing amount of energy. I would say that is more my forte over anything else.

Sanitation Woes Continues To Haunt India

How do you define urbanisation? Having adequate public toilets or more number of people using mobile phones?

According to a report issued by United Nations, India, which is the world's second most populous country, have more number of mobile phones than to toilet facility.

"It is a tragic irony to think that in India, a country now wealthy enough that roughly half of the people own phones, about half cannot afford the basic necessity and dignity of a toilet," said Zafar Adeel, Director of United Nations University's International Network On Water, Environment and Health (INWEH).

The report was penned down by expert who are working on ways to meet the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) on sanitation by 2015.

They also urge the world community to set a new target beyond the MDG (which calls for a 50 per cent improvement in access to adequate sanitation by 2015) to the achievement of 100 per cent coverage by 2025.

Recent UN research in India shows roughly 366 million people (31 per cent of the population) had access to improved sanitation in 2008.

Another data indicates that 545 million cell phones are now connected to service in India's emerging economy. The number of cell phones per 100 people has increased from 0.35 in year 2000-01 to about 45 today.

It costs about 300 dollars to build a toilet and to achieve the MDG target worldwide, a total of 358 billion dollars are needed for sanitation.

Opera for iPhone: one million downloads on first day

iPhone users have rushed to replace their phone's Safari browser with Opera, downloading it more than one million times on the first day of release, the Norwegian firm Opera Software said.

On April 13 Apple accepted distribution of the browser for the iPhone after a long review, opening a new and potentially lucrative market it had closely guarded.

"Apple said 'Yes' and iPhone users around the world said 'Yes, please'," Opera said in a statement.

The browser promises up to six times faster download speeds than Apple's own browser. It also promises to cut data traffic by up to 90 percent.

Massive data traffic from iPhone mobile phones has caused problems for many operators' networks worldwide.

Paathshaala review: Needs a little more hardwork!

Movie:Paathshaala
Director:Milind Ukey
Cast:Shahid Kapoor, Nana Patekar and Ayesha Takia Azmi

Taran Adarsh/IndiaFM

Pick up a newspaper or surf news channels and I'm sure, atrocities being committed on students by teachers/principals wouldn't escape your attention. Also do a Google and so many results on this topic would open up in a fraction of seconds.

Educational institutions - not all, but a few definitely - are in a crazy rush to create a brand for themselves and even parents (not all, again) are keen that their kids become scholars and whiz kids overnight. Resultantly, the child is not just burdened with a bulky school bag on his back, but also carries the burden of ambitions, aspirations and unfulfilled dreams on his tiny, frail shoulders.

Paathshaala merely touches the tip of the iceberg. It attempts to answer questions related to the sanctity of today's education system. It sheds light on the shortcomings in today's schools and how morals and ethics associated with the teaching profession seem to have taken a complete backseat. Let's not compare it with Taare Zameen Par or 3 Idiots, although a few sequences, in these two trend-setting films, threw light on the pressures on students.

Paathshaala, penned by Ahmed Khan and directed by Milind Ukey, is well-intentioned. It has a lot to say, but the predicament is, what translates on celluloid is not razor-sharp. Of course, there are few defining moments in the movie, which do make you ponder on the plight of the educational system. But there are also portions - when the media steps in to boost the brand of the school - that are mumbo-jumbo.

On the brighter side, the acting is distinguished. Nana underplays beautifully, Ayesha adds to the sunshine moments, but it's Shahid who pitches in a commendable and convincing act.

Final word? Paathshaala, made with noble intentions, could've been a splendid wake up call, but it runs out of steam midway!

The story begins with a new English teacher, Rahul Prakash Udyavar (Shahid Kapoor), joining Saraswati Vidya Mandir School. Though he strikes an instant rapport with students and teachers alike, he realizes that there is something amiss in the school.

Slowly, his doubts prove true as School Manager Sharma (Saurabh Shukla) makes many monetary obligations compulsory on the parents in the name of extra-curricular activities. He goes to the extent of punishing the students inhumanly when the new, unjustified demands of the school are not fulfilled by the parents.

When Rahul unifies the teachers (Ayesha Takia, Sushant Singh) against the atrocities of school management, Principal Aditya Sahay (Nana Patekar) defends the management decision. This comes as a shocker to the teachers as Sahay is known for his dedication as an educationist for last 32 years, which has built the school's high reputation.

The situation turns grave as the school management becomes over-ambitious with its growth and involves media planners in the extra-curricular activities. This demands the involvement of students in TV reality shows and many other media activities used for building up the school image in public, which starts reflecting on the students' stress levels. The pressure on young minds increases incredibly, leading to unexpected consequences.

One of my childhood memories is of a few students being called to the principal's office and being reprimanded for not paying their school fees on time. In another instance, I vividly recall a student being made to stand in scorching heat, under the blazing sun, since he was up to some mischief all the while. The barbaric attitude was a way of teaching the student a lesson.

Paathshaala brings back those dark memories because the film encapsulates these two incidents on celluloid. The problem with the film is, it gets very real at times, but gets farcical as well. The participation of kids in media activities doesn't have a hammer-strong impact. The chilly portion and the director capturing it on camera, or the press photographer munching samosa as the kids get ready with a pyramid, looks unreal, despite being identifiable incidents. Even the climax is confusing. What is Nana saying in the concluding reels lacks precision.

Director Milind Ukey has filmed some scenes expertly, but, as mentioned above, the film lacks the power to make you do a serious introspection. Hanif Shaikh's music is strictly okay.

Nana is very much in sync with his character. Shahid displays the vulnerability and helplessness remarkably. Ayesha is a complete natural, as always. Amongst the plethora of teachers and students, Sushant Singh does well, Sushmita Mukherjee is serviceable and Saurabh Shukla is so effective, you start hating him for his repulsive attitude.

On the whole, Paathshaala is a well-intentioned film, but lacks clarity thanks to an uninspiring screenplay.

Sunanda Pushkar hires lawyer in Dubai, may file damages

DUBAI: Sunanda Pushkar, the woman at the centre of a ownership controversy surrounding the Kochi IPL franchise, is considering filing for damages and has hired a Dubai-based lawyer for the purpose.

It has been alleged that Pushkar got free equity worth 70 crore rupees in the the Kochi franchise with the help of close friend Shashi Tharoor, who is Minister of State for External Affairs.

Ashish Mehta, the lawyer, said Pushkar has asked for his legal assistance.

"I write to confirm that Ms Sunanda Pushkar has engaged my professional services," Mehta said in a written statement lat night.

He said his client's image had been tarnished, and they would "seriously consider filing for damages".

Mehta insisted media has misrepresented her client and that facts needed to be put straight. According to him the reports that Pushkar was a beautician, spa owner or a socialite are untrue.

"Ms Pushkar has 20 years of hard core work experience." Sources say Pushkar made her fortune as an executive of a state-owned company in Dubai and has never been in the spa business.

"All this spa business is untrue. She has been an entrepreneur and businesswomen for long and that has brought her wealth," an ex-colleague of hers told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

‘The Japanese wife’ Raima Sen looks forward to ‘Mirch’

Basking in the glory of her widely appreciated performance in Aparna Sen’s film ‘The Japanese Wife’, actress Raima Sen eagerly awaits the release of her Hindi film ‘Mirch’ directed by Vinay Shukla who had introduced her to Bollywood with ‘Godmother’

“This is my second film with Vinay Shukla, who had directed me in Godmother and I have lots of hopes for Mirch because of the treatment,” Raima told PTI.

Of the four women-centric stories in the film, Sen will turn up in two, opposite Shreyas Talpade and Rajpal Yadav with each story sharing a common humorous strand.

Although Raima enjoys a superb track record in Bengali cinema the 30—year—old actress insists that she is not averse to any substantial commercial Bollywood project with a good script and competent directors.

“Look, I am open to commercial films, For every ’Godmother’, ‘Chokher Bali’, ‘Daman’, I have done ‘Parineeta’, ’Honeymoon Travels’ and ‘Manorama Six Feet Under’ I cannot be typecast for one type of roles only,” Raima, grand daughter of legendary actress Suchitra Sen and daughter of film diva Moon Moon Sen, said.

“I am ready to mould my image, I am ready to essay a role if that interests me. But certainly the offer has to come to me,” Raima said.

The actress, who is being appreciated for her role of a widow ‘Sandhya’ in ‘The Japanese Wife’, said that it was one of the most complex roles of her life as it was a challenge to bring out the understated performance and reflect the blank, matured and calm persona of the character.

She plays the mother of an eight-year-old boy, who mostly keeps silent, but lives like a shadow in the life of a village school teacher Snehamoy, played by Rahul Bose, despite not having any manifest relationship with him.

“I remember I was asked by Aparna Sen to get the expressions right, the look of a lowly placed widow in a rural area, to develop her body language. I also attended a workshop which helped. I am happy that Sen liked my role,” Raima said.

Referring to her on-screen chemistry with Rahul Bose Raima says that the actor is someone who she is very comfortable to work with.

“We had shared screen space in Anuranan by Aniruddha Roy Choudhury. I guess we vibe well. He is such a wonderful co-actor, so very natural and spontaneous,” she said.

“While I would like to do more films with Rinamashi (Aparna Sen), I have already been associated with a lot of works of Rituparno who similarly extracts intense performance from his actors,” she said.

Raima, who has worked with filmmaker-actor Rituparno Ghosh in ‘Antarmahal’ and ‘Khela’ besides ‘Chokher Bali’ also has a special cameo in his ‘Sunglass’

Asked about ‘Nouka Dubi’, Rituparno’s next Tagore film, Raima explained though it features both her and sister Riya Sen, they would not be sharing the frame.

“Our roles are diverse, but I am happy to be in the same project with my sister. This is our first film together,” Raima said.

The actress is also set to share the screen with Deepti Naval and Rituparno in upcoming film ‘Asamapt’

“While my role is that of an art director in a company, Rituparno enacts the creative head. Deepti Naval is the mother of a dead child who is the only link among three of us,” she says without divulging any other detail.

Preity Rich Zinta is worth more than '1000 cores'

Despite Kings XI Punjab's poor run at the IPL this year, it's owner Preity Zinta remains one of the wealthiest lady in the tinsletown. According to some cricket experts, Preity's stake in her cricket team alone is valued at around Rs 350 to Rs 400 crores.

Not only that, the actress is also likely to be declared the heiress to Shandar Amrohi, who is one of the co-owners of Kamalistan Studios (worth Rs 600 crores) that originally belonged to Meena Kumari and Kamal Amrohi. It is said to be a prime property, being eyed by several builders.

Shandar considers Preity to be his adopted daughter and wants to will his property to her. However, the legal dispute over Kamal Amrohi's property remains unresolved and is leading towards an out-of-court settlement. Now, the buzz is that Preity might restore the Kamalistan Studios.

There is a strong rumour that suggests that at some point Preity will sell some part of her IPL stake and redevelop the Kamalistan property alongwith a high-profile builder from Pune.

JSON in JavaScript

JavaScript is a general purpose programming language that was introduced as the page scripting language for Netscape Navigator. It is still widely believed to be a subset of Java, but it is not. It is a Scheme-like language with C-like syntax and soft objects. JavaScript was standardized in the ECMAScript Language Specification, Third Edition.

JSON is a subset of the object literal notation of JavaScript. Since JSON is a subset of JavaScript, it can be used in the language with no muss or fuss.

var myJSONObject = {"bindings": [
{"ircEvent": "PRIVMSG", "method": "newURI", "regex": "^http://.*"},
{"ircEvent": "PRIVMSG", "method": "deleteURI", "regex": "^delete.*"},
{"ircEvent": "PRIVMSG", "method": "randomURI", "regex": "^random.*"}
]
};

In this example, an object is created containing a single member "bindings", which contains an array containing three objects, each containing "ircEvent", "method", and "regex" members.

Members can be retrieved using dot or subscript operators.

myJSONObject.bindings[0].method // "newURI"

To convert a JSON text into an object, you can use the eval() function. eval() invokes the JavaScript compiler. Since JSON is a proper subset of JavaScript, the compiler will correctly parse the text and produce an object structure. The text must be wrapped in parens to avoid tripping on an ambiguity in JavaScript's syntax.

var myObject = eval('(' + myJSONtext + ')');

The eval function is very fast. However, it can compile and execute any JavaScript program, so there can be security issues. The use of eval is indicated when the source is trusted and competent. It is much safer to use a JSON parser. In web applications over XMLHttpRequest, communication is permitted only to the same origin that provide that page, so it is trusted. But it might not be competent. If the server is not rigorous in its JSON encoding, or if it does not scrupulously validate all of its inputs, then it could deliver invalid JSON text that could be carrying dangerous script. The eval function would execute the script, unleashing its malice.

To defend against this, a JSON parser should be used. A JSON parser will recognize only JSON text, rejecting all scripts. In browsers that provide native JSON support, JSON parsers are also much faster than eval. It is expected that native JSON support will be included in the next ECMAScript standard.

var myObject = JSON.parse(myJSONtext, reviver);

The optional reviver parameter is a function that will be called for every key and value at every level of the final result. Each value will be replaced by the result of the reviver function. This can be used to reform generic objects into instances of pseudoclasses, or to transform date strings into Date objects.

myData = JSON.parse(text, function (key, value) {
var type;
if (value && typeof value === 'object') {
type = value.type;
if (typeof type === 'string' && typeof window[type] === 'function') {
return new (window[type])(value);
}
}
return value;
});

A JSON stringifier goes in the opposite direction, converting JavaScript data structures into JSON text. JSON does not support cyclic data structures, so be careful to not give cyclical structures to the JSON stringifier.

var myJSONText = JSON.stringify(myObject, replacer);

If the stringify method sees an object that contains a toJSON method, it calls that method, and stringifies the value returned. This allows an object to determine its own JSON representation.

The stringifier method can take an optional array of strings. These strings are used to select the properties that will be included in the JSON text.

The stringifier method can take an optional replacer function. It will be called after the toJSON method (if there is one) on each of the values in the structure. It will be passed each key and value as parameters, and this will be bound to object holding the key. The value returned will be stringified.

Values that do not have a representation in JSON (such as functions and undefined) are excluded.

Nonfinite numbers are replaced with null. To substitute other values, you could use a replacer function like this:

function replacer(key, value) {
if (typeof value === 'number' && !isFinite(value)) {
return String(value);
}
return value;
}

Giving a corresponding reviver to JSON.parse can undo that.

How to Integrate Smarty Template to Code Igniter and to use as a View

Introduction

In this tutorial I will show you how to integrate Smarty Template in to Code Igniter and used it as view.

Requirements

1. Code Igniter
2. Smarty Template

Installation and Instructions

1. Download, unzip and install the Code Igniter Framework.

2. Download and unzip the Smarty Template

2.1 Locate the ‘libs’ directory in your Smarty directory ‘Smarty-*.*.**’

2.2 Copy the ‘libs’ directory to Code Igniter installation
[code igniter installation]/system/application/libraries/

2.3 Create a directory 'smarty' in Code Igniter
[code igniter installation]/system/application/libraries/

2.4 Rename the 'libs' to 'libs_*.*.**' (Ex. libs_2.6.22) *.*.** is the Smarty version
and place it to [code igniter installation]/system/application/libraries/smarty/

You can easily manage your Smarty version using the code below.

require "smarty/libs_2.6.22/Smarty.class.php";

3. Create the file below and name it to 'mysmarty.php' and place it to
[code igniter installation]/system/application/libraries/

File: [code igniter installation]/system/application/libraries/mysmarty.php
 ?php if (!defined('BASEPATH')) exit('No direct script access allowed');

 require "smarty/libs_2.6.22/Smarty.class.php";

 class Mysmarty extends Smarty
 {
  public function __construct ( )
  {
   parent::Smarty( );

   $config =& get_config( );

   $this->left_delimiter =  '{{';
   $this->right_delimiter =  '}}';

   // absolute path prevents "template not found" errors
   $this->template_dir = (!empty($config['smarty_template_dir']) ? $config['smarty_template_dir'] : BASEPATH . 'application/views/');

   $this->compile_dir  = (!empty($config['smarty_compile_dir']) ? $config['compile_dir'] : BASEPATH . 'cache/'); //use CI's cache folder
  }

  public function view ( $resource_name, $cache_id = null )
  {
   if ( strpos($resource_name, '.') === false )
    $resource_name .= '.tpl';

   return parent::display( $resource_name, $cache_id );
  }
 }

?

4. Edit your 'autoload.php' and autoload your 'mysmarty'
[code igniter installation]/system/application/config/autoload.php

See the code below

$autoload['libraries'] = array( 'database', 'session', 'mysmarty' );

IMPORTANT: If you are using 'mysmarty' in other library, it must be loaded first prior to your other plugin.

Correct:

$autoload['libraries'] = array( 'database', 'session', 'mysmarty', 'otherlibrary' );

Congratulation! You have successfully integrated the Smarty Template to your Code Igniter Framework. Now, the next step is how to use Smarty to your template.

Your templates must reside in
[code igniter installation]/system/application/views/

View:
[code igniter installation]/system/application/views/home.tpl

....
< body >
     {{* display value *}}
     {{$my_template_variable}}
< /body >
....

Controller:
[code igniter installation]/system/application/controller/home.php

 ?php  if (!defined('BASEPATH')) exit('No direct script access allowed');

 class Home extends Controller
 {
  function __construct ( )
  {
   parent::Controller( );
  }

  public function index ( )
  {
   // set value ...
            $this->assign( 'my_template_variable', 'This is the value.' );

   // call the template ...
            $this->mysmarty->view( 'home' );
  }
 }

?

How to connect MSSQL with php

Please follow the steps given below to connect MSSQL with php:
1. Settings related to your php.ini file:
a) search the variable mssql.secure_connection in your php.ini file and put it to on mode if its off
b) remove comment from the dll extention php_mssql.dll (i.e. remove the ; from the front of the extention )
2. Settings related to the dll files.
download a file name ntwdblib.dll from the internet. you can download it from here or can search on internet for that. copy the downloaded dll to the apache/bin directory and for IIS copy it to the php extention directory (if path not known can be found in php.ini for variable extension_dir)
also you need to have your php_mssql.dll in your php extension directory. if its not present please download it and copy it to the default php extension directory.
3. restart all your services (i.e. php and apache or iis) and you can use the script given below to connect to your SQL Server.

Human Nature Jokes

William Williams hated nicknames. He used to say that most fine given names were ruined by abbreviations, which was a sin and a shame. "I myself," he said, "am one of six brothers. We were all given good, old-fashioned Christian names, but all those names were shortened into meaningless or feeble monosyllables by our friends. I shall name my children so that it will be impracticable to curtail their names."
The Williams family, in the course of time, was blessed with five children, all boys. The eldest was named after the father--William. Of course, that would be shortened to "Will" or enfeebled to "Willie"—but wait! A second son came and was christened Willard. "Aha!" chuckled Mr. Williams, "now everybody will have to speak the full names of each of these boys in order to distinguish them."
In pursuance of this scheme the next three sons were named Wilbert, Wilfred, and Wilmont.
They are all big boys now. And they are respectively known to their intimates as Bill, Skinny, Butch, Chuck, and Kid.

SAFE
Carolyn Wells wrote:
Once upon a time there lived an elderly millionaire who had four nephews. Desiring to make one of these his heir, he tested their cleverness.
He gave to each a one-hundred-dollar bill, with the request that they hide the bills for a year in the city of New York.
Any of them who should succeed in finding the hidden bill at the end of the year should share in the inheritance.
The year being over, the four nephews brought their reports.
The first, deeply chagrined, told how he had put his bill in the strongest and surest safety deposit vaults, but, alas, clever thieves had broken in and stolen it.
The second had put his bill in charge of a tried and true friend. But the friend had proved untrustworthy and had spent the money.
The third had hidden his bill in a crevice in the floor of his room, but a mouse had nibbled it to bits to build her nest.
The fourth nephew calmly produced his hundred-dollar bill, as crisp and fresh as when it had been given him.
"And where did you hide it?" asked his uncle.
"Too easy! I stuck it in a hotel Bible."

MR. SUNSHINE AND MR. GLOOM
Changing others over to suit yourself is not always the easiest thing in the world, although it is often tried. The head of a large firm thought he would try it, and his experience is related by one of the "boys" in the office:
The old man--for we always referred to the head of the firm in this way--called the young fellow in to him one day and said:
"Look here, young man; you've got to be more agreeable. I want everybody in this place to have a smiling face. If I didn't think you had ability I would have fired you long ago. Your manners are bad. Make 'em better. Don't be a grouch."
The young chap didn't seem to take kindly to this advice. The frown on his face was still there. But he bowed and said:
"All right, sir."
Then the old man--for it was his busy morning--called another young fellow in and said:
"Look here, young man; I don't want you to be so genial. You're always telling funny stories around the place and waiting on the girls. Your sunny smile is all right, but you carry it too far. Why, when you come around everybody stops work. Get down to business."
"That reminds me, sir," said the young chap--but his employer waved him off.
"Do as I tell you," he said sternly, "or--"
At the end of another week the old man called them both into his office.
"Neither of you seems to be improving in the way I want. But I have an idea. I'm going to put your desks next to each other. That ought to do it. You're both good men, but you lean too far in the opposite directions. Run away now and act on each other."
At the end of still another week, however, when once more they both stood in front of him, he betrayed his disappointment.
"It doesn't seem to work," he exclaimed. "What's the matter with you boys, anyway? I thought my experiment would cure both of you, but it doesn't seem to work."
Turning to Mr. Sunshine, he said:
"Look here; why hasn't he done you any good?"
Mr. Sunshine beamed and chuckled.
"Well, sir," he said, "I can't help it. Why, that fellow over there hasn't got a thing in the world to worry him. He isn't married, his salary is really more than he needs. He has no responsibilities, and if he should die to-morrow nobody would suffer. But he hasn't got sense enough to have a good time. He strikes me as being such a joke that it makes me laugh harder than ever."
Turning to Mr. Gloom, the old man said:
"Well, how about you? Why hasn't this chap done you any good?"
Mr. Gloom looked more sour than ever.
"He hasn't the slightest idea of the problems that confront me," he said, "or what I suffer. But what really makes me mad is this: He has a wife and four young children on his hands, on the same salary I get. How they manage I don't know. It isn't living at all. And when I see a fellow like that, who ought to be worried to death all the time--and who would be if he looked the facts squarely in the face--grinning and telling stories like a minstrel, it makes me so d----d mad that I can't see straight."

BALLS
A young married couple who lived near a famous golf-course were entertaining an elderly aunt from the depths of the country.
"Well, Aunt Mary, how did you spend this afternoon?" asked the hostess on the first day.
"Oh, I enjoyed myself very much," replied Auntie with a beaming smile, "I went for a walk across the fields. There seemed to be a great many people about, and some of them shouted to me in a most eccentric manner, but I just took no notice. And, by the way," she went on, "I found such a number of curious little round white things. I brought them home to ask you what they are."

A RECORD BREAKER
Along the Fox River, a few miles above Wedron, Ill., an old-timer named Andy Haskins has a shack, and he has made most of the record fish catches in that vicinity during forty years. He has a big record book containing dates and weights to impress visitors.
Last summer a young married couple from Chicago camped in a luxurious lodge three miles above old Haskins's place. A baby was born at the lodge, and the only scales the father could obtain on which to weigh the child was that with which Andy Haskins had weighed all the big fish he had caught in ten years.
The baby tipped the scales at thirty-five pounds!

STILL NOT SATISFIED
Mrs. Higgins was an incurable grumbler. She grumbled at everything and everyone. But at last the vicar thought he had found something about which she could make no complaint; the old lady's crop of potatoes was certainly the finest for miles round.
"Ah, for once you must be well pleased," he said, with a beaming smile, as he met her in the village street. "Everyone's saying how splendid your potatoes are this year."
The old lady glowered at him as she answered:
"They're not so poor. But where's the bad ones for the pigs?"

A DELIGHTFUL EXPERIENCE!
We often take delight in fancying what we would do if things were really reversed in this oftentimes trying world: and particularly what we would do to the president of our bank. Here is a little story which gives the pleasant variety:
"I have come in to borrow some money from you," said the bank president timidly, as he stood before one of his depositors, nervously twirling his hat in his hand.
"Ah, yes," said the depositor, gazing at him severely. "But you don't expect to get it, do you?"
"I had hoped to."
"What collateral have you to offer?"
"My bank with all the money in it."
"All the people in the bank?"
"Yes."
"Please say 'Yes, sir.' It is more respectful."
"Thank you, sir."
"Um! Ah! Will you put in your own family?"
"Yes, sir, I'll throw in my family also."
"Your prospects in life? Don't hesitate, man. Remember you are up against it."
"Well, yes, sir."
"How much money do you want?"
"One thousand dollars."
"Dear me! For such a small amount as that I shall have to charge you at least six per cent. If you were a regular millionaire and wanted, say, half a million, I could let you have it for three or four per cent."
"Yes, sir. I appreciate your generosity."
The depositor handed the president of the bank, who was now almost completely bathed in a cold perspiration, a blank form.
"Here," he said, "sign this."
"Do you wish me to read it first, sir?"
"What! Read something you wouldn't understand anyway? No. I'll tell you what's in it. It mortgages yourself, your bank, all the people in it, your family, all your property, and your soul Sign here."
The bank president signed with trembling fingers, got a piece of paper which entitled him to the privilege of entertaining a thousand dollars for six months at his own expense, and withdrew.
Then the depositor, smiling to himself and rubbing his hands, said:
"Aha! I'll teach these fellows to know their places!"

ROTUND
An elderly woman who was extremely stout was endeavoring to enter a street car when the conductor, noticing her difficulty, said to her:
"Try sideways, madam; try sideways."
The woman looked up breathlessly and said: "Why, bless ye, I ain't got no sideways!"

OVER HERE
The hobo knocked at the back door and the lady of the house appeared.
"Lady," he said, "I was at the front--"
"You poor man!" she exclaimed. "One of war's victims. Wait till I get you some food, and you shall tell me your story. You were in the trenches, you say?"
"Not in the trenches. I was at the front--"
"Don't try to talk with your mouth full. Take your time. What deed of heroism did you do at the front?"
"Why, I knocked, but I couldn't make nobody hear, so I came around to the back."

HIS LACK
A keen-eyed mountaineer led his overgrown son into a country schoolhouse.
"This here boy's arter larnin'," he announced. "What's yer bill o' fare?"
"Our curriculum, sir," corrected the school-master, "embraces geography, arithmetic, trigonometry--"
"That'll do," interrupted the father. "That'll do. Load him up well with triggernometry. He's the only poor shot in the family."

MISTAKEN IDENTITY?
A kindergarten teacher entering a street-car saw a gentleman whose face seemed familiar, and she said, "Good evening!"
He seemed somewhat surprised, and she soon realized that she had spoken to a stranger. Much confused, she explained: "When I first saw you I thought you were the father of two of my children."

WASN'T CALLING HER DEAR
Desirous of buying a camera, a certain fair young woman inspected the stock of a local shopkeeper.
"Is this a good one?" she asked, as she picked up a dainty little machine. "What is it called?"
"That's the Belvedere," said the handsome young shopman politely.
There was a chilly silence. Then the young woman drew herself coldly erect, fixed him with an icy stare, and asked again:
"Er--and can you recommend the Belva?"

ISRO set to launch GSLV-D3 today

The stage is all set for the launch of the first flight-testing of indigenous cryogenic engine on homespun rocket, Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV-D3), from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota at 4.27 pm today.
The 29-hour countdown for the lift-off began at 11.27 a.m. on Wednesday is progressing smoothly.
The cryogenic engine is crucial for putting communication satellites weighing more than two tonnes into geosynchronous transfer orbit (GTO).
The GSLV-D3 would put the GSAT-4 satellite into the GTO.
The success of the GSLV-D 3 would take India into the elite club of space-faring nations comprising the United States, Russia, certain European countries, Japan, and China who possess complex cryogenic technology.
The rocket is 49 meters tall and weighs 419 tonnes. The rocket will carry communication satellite GSAT-4 and others weighing more than two tonnes.
This is the first time India would be using indigenously built cryogenic stage and technology, which is crucial to put communication satellites weighing more than two tonnes in GTO.
The indigenous technology has come to fruition nearly 19 years after India was denied the cryogenic technology.
India earlier made effort to acquire cryogenic propellant technology from Russia in 1992 but the plan didn't bear fruit because of fierce opposition from big powers.

The first 3D OLED display

The first 3D OLED display

TVLogic-TDM-150W,T-H-244709-3TVLogic, a manufacturer of displays for professionals, has introduced two new 15-inch OLED displays, the LEM-150W-150W and CT, the latter having the distinction of providing a stereoscopic 3D image.
A 2D screen
The slab probably come from LG-Display, which is the only manufacturer to offer models that diagonal OLED. The first screen is rather classic with a resolution of 1 366 x 768, contrast 000:1 100, viewing angles of 180 °, 2 x 3 HD / SD-SDI and 2 x 3 HD / SD-SDI DVI, HDMI and HDCP technologies for producers or distributors as display Timecode (VITC / LTC) and a sensor measuring the noise level.
OLEDs 3D arrive
The second is much more interesting because cons reported marketing of the first OLED display stereoscopic 3D. Identical to the first, it offers the possibility of separating the 3D video stream right and left to have more precision when editing an image.
We recall that Samsung had announced a 3D OLED TV at the end of last year (see “Netbooks and 3D TV OLED), but the Korean has not put its product on the market and it is not designed to use a computer at home. The fact that such a screen so TVLogic nevertheless shows that the technology is ready and should penetrate the consumer market a few years.

PC Sales Are on Course for Big Increase in 2010

The personal computer was beginning to look like yesteryear’s gizmo, a technology relic overshadowed by smartphones, e-readers and, lately, Apple’s iPad. But the old beige box has proved remarkably resilient and relevant.

Enlarge This Image
The PC industry shrugged off the recession last year to post a surprising rise in worldwide computer sales. In a sign of the vibrancy of the market, companies like Google and Nokia — not traditionally makers of PCs — have jumped into the competition; Google is developing an operating system to compete with Microsoft’s Windows, and Nokia now sells a laptop.
Meanwhile, the early indicators for this year show PC sales surging. On Tuesday, Intel, the world’s largest PC chip maker, reported the highest first-quarter sales, $10.3 billion, and profit, $2.4 billion, in its history. After digesting Intel’s results, a number of Wall Street analysts said on Wednesday that the PC market could grow as much as 25 percent this year.
Also on Wednesday, the research firm Gartner said worldwide PC shipments climbed by 27.4 percent in the first quarter compared with a year earlier, surpassing expectations by more than 5 percent.
While experts engage in a fierce debate about the health of the overall economy, the technology sector has marched on in recovery mode. Intel, as a major supplier, tends to provide an early glimpse into the overall health of the sector and with its latest results has posted sales figures that surpass pre-recession levels.
Consumers have led the PC charge through their fondness for netbooks, the cheap, tiny laptops that were introduced about three years ago. Rather than eating into laptop sales, these devices have attracted consumers to a new category of complementary computers. And now Apple, with its iPad, and other companies are seeking to lure even more buyers with their interpretations on a thinner, lighter computer.
Intel officials attributed the first-quarter results to record purchases of laptop chips and of more expensive, faster chips. At the same time, they said, large corporations, many of which have four-year-old computers, have finally started upgrading their aging machines.
“We are seeing signs of life in the corporate market,” said Stacy J. Smith, the chief financial officer at Intel, during an interview.
Last April, Paul S. Otellini, the chief executive at Intel, proclaimed that the PC industry had hit bottom in early 2009, and would recover throughout the year. With sales across the technology sector at record lows and the worldwide economy mired in a slump, Mr. Otellini’s optimism was questioned as premature.
Just one month earlier, Gartner had forecast that PC sales would fall by 12 percent in 2009, which would have been their steepest decline in history.
Ultimately, global PC sales rose more than 5 percent in 2009. The PC market’s relative health stood in contrast to depressed markets for cars, cellphones, televisions and other goods used by people on a daily basis.
Even on tight budgets, consumers continued to buy laptops in large quantities and flocked to netbooks, which accounted for more than one-fifth of laptop sales in regions like Europe. Companies like Intel, Hewlett-Packard and Microsoft make less money from the low-cost netbooks, but the devices have kept shipment numbers high by creating a new niche for computers. About 95 percent of people buy netbooks as an additional computer rather than as a laptop replacement, according to Intel’s surveys of its customers.
Companies like Apple, H.P. and Nokia want to use trimmed-down, specialized versions of laptops as a way to offer people access to their content and software services, creating a deeper customer relationships.
“The hardware is a type of Trojan horse to give these companies access to consumers and their wallets,” said Ashok Kumar, a technology analyst with Rodman & Renshaw.
In addition to Google’s expected release of its PC operating system and Nokia’s laptop, both companies are also preparing competitors to the iPad, according to people who have been briefed on the companies’ plans but are not authorized to speak publicly about them.
It remains difficult, however, to draw any conclusions about the vibrancy of the PC market and the overall economy, some analysts say.
Roger L. Kay, a longtime PC industry analyst, said that in the 1990s, computers were often viewed as a leading indicator for the economy’s behavior. “Corporations would buy them to invest in higher productivity in the future,” he said.
But he warned that it was difficult in the previous decade to connect the health of the PC market to the health of the broader economy. PC sales, he said, “have slipped from leading to concurrent indicators.”
Mr. Smith from Intel said PCs had become such crucial devices to everyday life that they could withstand the gyrations of the economy better than most products and seemed to recover early.
“The telling data point is one from last year when the PC market bottomed out and then recovered quickly in comparison to things like TVs, cars and washing machines,” Mr. Smith said. “I can only take away that at least in this downturn, PCs were a leading indicator.”
Mr. Smith’s son learned about his father’s lofty view of the PC’s importance the hard way.
“Over the last decade, the PC has gone from an interesting device to a necessary device,” he said. “When I want to ground my son, I take away his PC for the night, not his TV.”

IIT alumnus kills sister, tries to end life

PUNE: A 29-year-old IIT-Kharagpur alumnus allegedly throttled his 23-year-old sister to death and attempted to commit suicide by slashing his wrist and consuming phenyl at their rented apartment at Bavdhan in the early hours of Wednesday.

The Hinjewadi police said the accused, Subhojit Basu, an engineer, then called up his former professor at IIT-Kharagpur and told him what he had done. The professor, Aurobindo Roy, managed to contact the police control room here around 4 am and gave Basu's address.

"When we reached the apartment, we found the door open and Basu sobbing near his sister, Priyadarshani, who lay unconscious on the floor," said sub-inspector A S Wanjari of the Hinjewadi police station. The police shifted both to Sassoon hospital, where Priyadarshani was declared dead on arrival.

The police have booked Basu under sections 302 (murder) and 309 (attempting suicide) of the Indian Penal Code. Deputy commissioner of police (zone-III) Mahesh Patil told TOI that Basu owns a start-up at the National Chemical Laboratory's (NCL) Innovation Park at Pashan while Priyadarshani was working with Greenpeace India Society's Pune office located on Paud road.

The police are yet to establish the motive behind the murder as Basu has not been revealing much during questioning.

Sony Ericsson has announced the addition of two new phones to its portfolio. Awkwardly named Zylo and Spiro, these phones have been categorized as "Walkman" devices. Let us take a look at both these devices and check what they have in store for you, the potential buyer. Zylo The Zylo, as mentioned earlier in this article, happens to be a Walkman music player and is among the first mobile phones to feature FLAC audio playback support. This is apart from the normal Walkman features you'd see on a Sony Ericsson music phone. We're talking about features like TrackID and the PlayNow music store. Apart from music, the Zylo concentrates on another aspect as well - Social Networking. The phone, like many in the market, is designed keeping in mind various social networks. It has easy access to both Facebook and Twitter. Users can also share their photos to Flickr and Picasa, or upload videos to YouTube directly from the phone. The Zylo comes equipped with a decent 3.2 megapixel camera, Bluetooth support and Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync support. The display is quite large for a non touch device at over 2.6-inches. The resolution thought might be a tad low at 320 x 240 pixels. The phone supports up to 16GB of microSD memory cards apart from the 260MB internal memory. Sony Ericsson expects the Zylo to be available in select markets in the third quarter of 2010, and the phone will be available in Jazz Black, Chacha Silver, and Swing Pink. Pricing has not yet been announced. Spiro The Spiro is positioned below the Zylo and comes with lesser features. This Walkman branded phone features a 3.5mm headphone jack, a 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth support and the Obigo Q7 web browser. At 2.2 inches, the screen is way smaller than that of the Zylo. The resolution, however, remains the same. Like the Zylo, the Spiro too supports memory expansion and can take microSD cards up to 16GB in size. The Spiro will be available in Contrast Black, Sunset Pink, Spring Green, and Stealth Black and is expected to be land on retail shelves in select markets in the third quarter of 2010. Pricing details for the Spiro too have been kept under the wraps.

Microsoft just signed a deal in which India-based Infosys will handle all of Microsoft's internal IT services. On the face of it, this seems a cost-saving move. But could it be a first step towards a Microsoft acquisition of the company as a way to become a big player in the global services market? It's not as far-fetched as you might think.
Under the three-year deal with Microsoft, Infosys will manage Microsoft's internal IT services, including, according to an Infosys press release:
IT help desk, desk-side services, and infrastructure and application support from multiple global centers. Infosys will manage Microsoft's internal IT services for applications, devices, and databases in 450 locations across 104 countries.
As you might guess, this is a big-money deal. The Times of India reports that it may run more than $100 million.
Microsoft claims that this is essentially business as usual, and told TechFlash that the deal
"...is simply a consolidation of work that used to be provided by multiple vendors to a single provider, Infosys. As you know, we have had a concentrated effort to be more efficient and save money. This was a major area where we could do this. This new contract will not impact our internal resources. And it won’t affect the usual internal exercises we do."
The New York Times Bits blog says that there's a chance that the deal is essentially a tryout for Infosys. If it passes the test, Microsoft may buy the company, and use it to launch a global services division. The blog says:

As Microsoft increasingly becomes an enterprise business, catering to corporate customers, there has been a lot of industry commentary and speculation that it might well make a big push into services --- perhaps even buying a big technology services company like Accenture or one of the India outsourcers like, say, Infosys.
Moving into the global services market would make a good deal of sense for Microsoft. The high-growth days of the company seem behind it. It has fallen far behind Google in search, one growth area, and its languishing in mobile, another growth area, even though the launch of Windows Phone 7 later this year may change that.
So where can the company look for growth? Services is clearly one area, because of its deep connections into enterprises worldwide. Buying Infosys would give it a ready-made division.
We won't know whether this is the case for quite some time. In the meantime, Microsoft employees will be in the same boat as the rest of us, it seems: going offshore when you call the Help Desk.

Sony Ericsson Zylo, Spiro Announced

Sony Ericsson has announced the addition of two new phones to its portfolio. Awkwardly named Zylo and Spiro, these phones have been categorized as "Walkman" devices.

Let us take a look at both these devices and check what they have in store for you, the potential buyer.

Zylo

The Zylo, as mentioned earlier in this article, happens to be a Walkman music player and is among the first mobile phones to feature FLAC audio playback support. This is apart from the normal Walkman features you'd see on a Sony Ericsson music phone. We're talking about features like TrackID and the PlayNow music store.

Spiro

The Spiro is positioned below the Zylo and comes with lesser features. This Walkman branded phone features a 3.5mm headphone jack, a 2 megapixel camera, stereo Bluetooth support and the Obigo Q7 web browser. At 2.2 inches, the screen is way smaller than that of the Zylo. The resolution, however, remains the same. The Spiro will be available in Contrast Black, Sunset Pink, Spring Green, and Stealth Black and is expected to be land on retail shelves in select markets in the third quarter of 2010. Pricing details for the Spiro too have been kept under the wraps.

Donations, supplies flood into quake-hit NW China region

BEIJING, April 15 (Xinhua) -- Chinese across the country, still haunted by the deadly 8.0-magnitude earthquake in Sichuan in 2008, are doing what they can to help the quake-hit northwestern province of Qinghai.
At least 617 were killed and close to 10,000 were injured or are missing after a 7.1-magnitude earthquake hit Qinghai's Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture of Yushu early Wednesday morning.
The Beijing's municipal government, the city's Party committee, and the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau have donated ten million yuan (about 1.47 million U.S. dollars) to Yushu, while the provincial governments of Liaoning and Fujian each gave five million, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said in a report on its website.
An additional 3.5 million yuan was donated by Jiangxi, Jiangsu, Gansu and Hebei Provinces.
Beijing has allocated 10,000 tents, 20,000 folded beds, and 100,000 cotton quilts for the quake-hit region, with Jiangxi Province adding in another 10,000 quilts.
Meanwhile, the Central Committee of the Communist Youth League of China raised three million yuan for quake relief, while its affiliated China Youth Development Foundation sent an emergency team with medicine, food, and other relief supplies worth one million yuan to the quake-hit zones.

Pranab-led panel to probe Tharoor charges

New Delhi: With a united Opposition gunning for Shashi Tharoor for his alleged involvement with IPL's Kochi team promoters, it was left to Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee to sort out the issue.
CNN IBN has learnt that the UPA has decided not to take any action till the Prime Minister returns. Pranab has also been asked to do the firefighting in Parliament if the Opposition tries to blame the government for not acting against Tharoor.
Union Minister Shashi Tharoor
 is in trouble following a controversy over the IPL Kochi team.
The minister from Kerala is willing to explain his case personally to the Prime Minister when he returns next week. PM had earlier said on Tharoor issue, "I will ascertain facts before deciding on the course of action."

So far, it's been a case of Lalit Modi's word versus Tharoor, both are still standing by their charges against each other. Modi maintains that Tharoor had called him to prevent him from finding out the real identities of Rendezvous Sports while Tharoor says he called Modi asking for speedy clearance of paper work of the IPL team.
In Parliament though, the Opposition has already pronounced its verdict. CPI's Nilotpal Basu has already made clear his party's stnace on the episode. "He must resign," Basu had said earlier. But for a party like the Congress where image means everything, Tharoor's graph has fallen rapidly.
So far he has managed to lead a charmed life due to his close proximity to the Congress president. Now as he faces the toughest challenge of his brief political career, it's Sonia's support that's going to be the make or break factor for him.

Catherine Zeta-Jones poses for first nude

Hollywood beauty Catherine Zeta Jones has proved that age does not matter when it comes to looking good as she has stripped for her first ever nude photoshoot at the age of 40.
The once-voluptuous actress who has faced criticism for her rapidly shrinking frame proved that she still has a figure to die for in the racy photoshoot, reported Daily Mail online.
In the pictures Zeta Jones poses naked on a rumpled bed smouldering into the camera and the Mask of the Zorro actress says that she did not think twice about undressing.
In fact, she reveals, nudity is just not an issue for her. When it was time for the nude portion of the shoot, the mother of two promptly dropped her robe for Allure magazine.
"That's when your dancing days and being in theatre pay off. When you're doing a quick change, you don't give a damn who sees you," said the actress who has two children with husband, Michael Douglas, 65.
However, while Zeta-Jones may be no shrinking violet, she revealed in an interview earlier this year how she is having to cover up more since moving to New York.
She told TV host David Letterman how she used to frolic nude at the sprawling Bermuda mansion where she lived with her family, but she now stays covered up after moving to the Big Apple last year.

India has more mobile telephones than toilets: UN report

UNITED NATIONS: More people in India, the world's second most crowded country, have access to a mobile telephone than to a toilet, according to a new UN study on how to cut the number of people with inadequate sanitation.

"It is a tragic irony to think that in India, a country now wealthy enough that roughly half of the people own phones, about half cannot afford the basic necessity and dignity of a toilet," said Zafar Adeel, Director of United Nations University's Institute for Water, Environment and Health (IWEH).

India has some 545 million cell phones, enough to serve about 45 per cent of the population, but only about 366 million people or 31 per cent of the population had access to improved sanitation in 2008.

The recommendations of United Nations University (UNU) released Wednesday are meant to accelerate the pace towards reaching the Millennium Development Goal (MDG) on halving the proportion of people without access to safe water and basic sanitation.

If current global trends continue, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) predict there will be a shortfall of 1 billion persons from that sanitation goal by the target date of 2015.

"Anyone who shirks the topic as repugnant, minimises it as undignified, or considers unworthy those in need should let others take over for the sake of 1.5 million children and countless others killed each year by contaminated water and unhealthy sanitation," said. Adeel.

Among the nine recommendations are the suggestions to adjust the MDG target from a 50 per cent improvement by 2015 to 100 per cent coverage by 2025; and to reassign official development assistance equal to 0.002 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) to sanitation.

The UNU report cites a rough cost of $300 to build a toilet, including labour, materials and advice.

"The world can expect, however, a return of between $3 and $34 for every dollar spent on sanitation, realized through reduced poverty and health costs and higher productivity - an economic and humanitarian opportunity of historic proportions," added Adeel.
