Ever since the mainstream Bollywood heroines have donned the bikini, the male fans have been left gasping for more. There is a popular one liner , “Jitni Bikini, utni bikni’ (which means, the more the bikini, the more is the profit) in Bollywood. And 2009 promises to be a bikini parade with Kambakkth Ishq having three women in bikinis-Kareena Kapoor(though it is actually a swim-suit), Amrita Arora and Hollywood babe Denise Richards. The bikini in Bollywood was initiated by Sharmila Tagore way back in 1967, which was considered a fearless almost taboo movie in those days. But the move was rarely adopted by a main-stream heroine.

Wearing a bikini became serious business aimed at increasing the movie’s glamour value after Esha Deol surpised audiences as she emerged from the waters in Dhoom(2004) in a bikini. After this, the bikini wave in Bollywood rode to such an extent that every actress is keen to show that she can strut a bikini better than others.

There have also been actresses who have denied the bikini as well, a couple of examples being:Aishwarya Rai and Priyanka Chopra. Aishwarya Rai was reportedly asked to wear a bikini for Dhoom2, which she denied. She gave her consent to wear sexy, skimpy attire rather than cavort in a bikini. Ditto for Priyanka Chopra, who decided to opt for sexy shorts and top, rather than a two piece bikini for Dostana.

Kareena Kapoor’s size zero figure in a bikini, in Tashan proved that bikini is not every woman’s cup of tea. The bad news is Kareena has decided to be off swimsuits and bikinis in films post Kambakkth Ishq Meanwhile here is the list of Bollywood actresses who have graced the bikini:

Kareena Kapoor: Kareena Kapoor donned the lime green bikini and had the audience gasping as she sensuously walked along the beach, undulating a perfect derriere in Tashan. Trust us, Kareena Kapoor’s bikini act in Tashan was the only time people in the theatre actually woke up from their sleep. Those who didn’t,watched Tashan again and risked the torture just to see Kareena Kapoor in a bikini. The talented actress is back to sizzle us again, this time with in a black swimsuit for Kambakkth Ishq. Though this is not a two piece like the lime green scorcher, Kareena has proved hat she is a woman who can look hot in every dress from the bikini to the saree.

Amrita Arora: Amrita Arora has worn a purple bikini for Kambakkth Ishq. Though she looks super hot in this dress, she has to compete with another bikini friendly bombshell, her friend Kareena Kapoor and Hollywood’s Denise Richards.

Illene Hamann: Illena Hamann is not your typical Bollywood actress but this South African beauty made us drool with a body made for sin. Illena Hamaann’s bikini act in Rog proved that no woman can really fill a bikini the way she could.

Celina Jaitley: Celina Jaitely has this tendency to make a memorable impression in forgettable films through a popular method: bikinis (what else!) Celina Jaitley played the violin in a two second scene in a bikini for Janasheen. She emerged from the waters in a scorching red hot bikini for Jawani Deewani. Celina Jaitley then continued the bikini trip in another flop Money Hai Toh Honey Hai

Mugdha Godse: Mugdha Godse strutted her stuff in Fashion in a sexy metallic two piece. And yes, Mughda looks so hot that it was tempting enough to hit the Pause button on DVD for a second look.

Minissha Lamba: Minissha Lamba says that she had to work really hard and sacrifice on food big time to get a terrific bikini figure like that. Minissha Lamba who looked good enough to Kidnap had a bikini scene which lasted less than a minute.

Neha Dhupia:Neha Dhupia’s bikini act in Julie and Sheesha were not so much publicized because she wore minimal clothing in almost every scene, which really didn’t make the bikini act stand out. And yes, Neha Dhupia again wore a striking pink two piece bikini for a scene from Qayamat. Blink and you will miss that scene.

Dhoom 2(2006) had Bipasha Basu really making the men swoon, her fab bikini figure which seemed to compliment her striking curves. Esha Deol: Esha Deol fuelled public imagination with a sensuous entry in a bikini(or what it looked like) in Dhoom(2003). Esha Deol did make a splash but failed to capitalize on the Dhoom effect.

Priyanka Chopra: Priyanka Chopra blazed the silver screen with her skimpy dresses and bikini in Andaz, her second film. Priyanka’s ‘andaz’ was noted and she made some good career moves, propelled by her pout and performance. Priyanka Chopra however declined to wear a two piece bikini and instead, settled for hot pants and swimsuits for Dostana.

Amisha Patel: Amisha Patel wanted to show that she can be in shape for a bikini too. Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic had Amisha Patel wearing everything from mini-skirts to the famous yellow bikini, which is perhaps the ONLY highlight of the film. The movie bombed but we discovered a bomb!

Hrishita Bhatt: Hrishita Bhatt wore a two piece bikini in a movie called Lara. The intention was right, but the platform wrong, alas! Good girl Hrishita seems to be slipping into the bad girl attire, and what better way, than a two piece bikini. Neha Dhupia will be proud, she is leaving behind a legacy! Hrishita has got the moves, the figure and the wow-some appeal, but then please choose a movie that can make people notice!

Neetu Chandra: Neetu Chandra chose Stardust to showcase her bikini figure. The spunky sporty gal who is arguably, the most under-rated performer of Bollywood looks hot in any dress from bikinis to the gharelu wifey clothes she wore in 13 B. But she has clearly said that she has no intention of stripping to the buff, come what may! Bikini is the farthest Neetu Chandra would probably go.

Sophie Chaudhary: Sophie Chaudhary slipped into a white bikini for a 4 second scene in Aa Dekhen Zara. Before you could say ‘Aa Dekhen Zara’, Sophie covered herself with a dress and shielded the blissful sight. Sigh!

Sameera Reddy: The voluptuous Sameera Reddy slimmed down to create a kick-ass figure in Musafir. Two things remain in public memory about Musafir: Sameera Reddy and her smooch scene with Anil Kapoor and Sameera Reddy’s white bikini.

Sharmila Tagore: For those interested in General Knowledge, Sharmila Tagore was the first Indian actress to don a bikini. She did it for an Evening in Paris,way back in 1967.
