Aligarh: The violent protests by farmers demanding a higher compensation for their land taken by the Uttar Pradesh government for the Yamuna Expressway continued for the third day in Aligarh today. Yamuna Expressway is a 165-km road corridor between Noida and Agra.

Thousands of agitating farmers gathered in the Jigarpur village where they burnt an effigy of Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati. Mayawati has promised to appoint a committee to look into the farmers' demands.

Rival politicos like Rashtriya Lok Dal chief Ajit Singh Choudhary too flocked to the spot. Backing the farmers' demands, he said that they should receive the same amount of compensation as the farmers in Noida. He also demanded a probe and strict action against the police officers who fired on the protestors.

Aligarh has been the epicentre of violence between farmers and the police since Saturday. The agitation turned violent after police allegedly arrested a leader of the farmers. Three farmers and a policeman died in the clashes yesterday.

Uproar in Parliament over farmer agitation

There was commotion in both Houses of Parliament today over the firing on protesting farmers in Uttar Pradesh. Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha were adjourned repeatedly with the Opposition demanding a discussion over the farmers' demands.

In Rajya Sabha, the BJP and BSP members clashed on the issue of police firing on farmers. The ruling BSP strongly opposed any demand for a discussion saying it was a state subject.

The BJP has demanded the introduction of the Land Acquisition Amendment Bill to address compensation to farmers whose land is acquired by the government.
